Alpro is proud to have worked hard towards ISO9001 Accreditation.

The Foundry Manager and key personnel in the foundry ensure the quality system is followed. Their efforts play a vital role in the production of castings here at Alpro and if it were not for the collective effort of everyone, it would not be possible to maintain the standard.

Every week, the foundry produces castings that require full certification and traceability.

ANALYSIS

SPECTROMETRY

Alpro invested in its own spectrometer so no longer has to rely on (or wait!) for third-party labs to produce results. The technical team can find out what the metal spec is BEFORE metal is poured. This is significant.

Most aluminium alloys have an upper and lower limit for specific elements. In particular, sodium, magnesium, copper and iron. These elements can have both a positive and negative impact on the final mechanical properties.

Vacuum Testing

VACUUM TESTING

DENSITY INDEXING

Alpro also performs vacuum testing on its batches of aluminium prior to casting.

This simple but vitally important test tells the technical team if the degassing process has been both effective and achieved the acceptable level. Reducing soluble hydrogen gases from molten aluminium is a critically important process, particularly for the sand cast process. It significantly limits the risk of porosity in castings. This type of porosity is often internal and only shows up on machining, x-ray or ultrasonic testing.

Effective degassing produces solid, dense aluminium that machines and performs well in service.

INSPECTION

X-RAY

X-RAY imaging for high integrity castings is something done most weeks.

Why x-ray imaging is so important:

  • Prevents field failures in parts used in aerospace, automotive, marine, and structural systems.

  • Verifies casting quality against design specifications and standards.

  • Identifies manufacturing process problems (e.g., poor gating, cooling, or degassing).

  • Reduces scrap and rework by catching issues early in production.

  • Provides traceable quality documentation for safety-critical industries.

INSPECTION

DYE PENETRATION

Alpro offers 'dye-pen' testing as part of a rigorous quality sytem for high integrity aluminium castings and results can be included in component quality reports.

Why dye penetrant testing (DPT) is important

  • Detects very small surface cracks that may be invisible to the naked eye.

  • Prevents component failure by identifying defects before parts enter service.

  • Non-destructive testing (NDT) – the part is not damaged during inspection.

  • High sensitivity – can reveal extremely fine discontinuities on the surface.

  • Simple and cost-effective compared with other inspection methods.

  • Works on many non-porous materials including aluminium, steel, titanium, ceramics, and plastics.

  • Improves safety in critical industries such as aerospace, automotive, and pressure systems.
